Anna's Rye Bread

Total Time: 1 hr 20 mins Preparation Time: 30 mins Cook Time: 50 mins

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups rye flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 compressed yeast cakes (dissolved in .5 cup warm water)
  • 6 cups flour (approximately)

Recipe

  • 1 scald milk, add shortening, and then add brown sugar.
  • 2 cool.
  • 3 add rye flour, salt, and yeast.
  • 4 add approximately 6 cups flour, enough to make a stiff dough.
  • 5 let rise until doubled, about 3 hours.
  • 6 knead and form into two loaves.
  • 7 bake at 425 degrees f for 15 min, then at 325 degrees f for 35 minute.
