Amish Bread

Total Time: 1 hr Preparation Time: 20 mins Cook Time: 40 mins

Ingredients

  • Servings: 24
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 6 cups bread flour

Recipe

  • 1 in a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, then add the yeast.
  • 2 when yeast is proofed, mix in salt and oil.
  • 3 mix in flour one cup at a time.
  • 4 knead dough adding more flour if necessary.
  • 5 place in a well oiled bowl and turn dough to coat.
  • 6 cover with a damp cloth.
  • 7 allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
  • 8 punch dough down.
  • 9 knead for a few minutes and divide in half.
  • 10 shape into loaves, and place into oiled pans.
  • 11 allow to rise until dough has risen 1 inch above the pans.
  • 12 bake at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes.
